FAQ

How does my identity work, and why is there no password?

When you first open Jatkuu, your device creates a key pair. The public key is your identity in a room; the private key never leaves your device and signs every change you make, so nobody can act as you. There is nothing to log in to, so there is no password to remember or leak. Your backup is a 12 word recovery phrase that you can show, copy or save as a file in Settings.

What happens if I lose my recovery phrase?

If you lose both the phrase and the device, and you did not add a recovery email, that identity is gone. We cannot recover it because we never have the phrase or the private key. Your partner can invite you into the room again with a fresh identity, but your history stays attached to the old one. Write the phrase down or save it in your password manager while you still have the device.

What is the recovery email, and is it safe?

Optional insurance for a lost phone. Under Settings, Recovery, you add an email address and confirm it with a six-digit code. From then on, "Restore with email" on a new phone sends a link that works once, for 15 minutes, and brings your identity and your rooms back, without the 12 words. Remove the email at any time and it is as if it never existed.

The honest trade-off: to make this work, our server keeps a sealed copy of your key. We can only open it with a key we hold, so adding an email means we could technically restore your identity, where before we could not. We only ever do so through a link to your address, every recovery is logged, and the 12 words keep working regardless. If you would rather keep the stricter model, simply do not add an email.

How do I move to a new phone?

Open Jatkuu on the new phone, tap “Restore with a recovery phrase” and enter your 12 words. Jatkuu restores your identity, finds your rooms and syncs their history. Keep the old phone until you have checked that everything is there.

Can I use Jatkuu on my own?

Yes. Pick "Just me" when you start. You get the same habits, streaks with forgiveness, catch-up reasons, mood and energy, insights and the weekly summary, without anyone else in the room. When you want company, the Room tab offers to turn it into a room for two or a group; your habits and history stay exactly as they are.

Can I be in more than one room?

Yes. One identity can be in any number of rooms: one with your partner, one with friends, one with the family. Tap the room name on the Room tab (or Settings, Room, Your rooms) to switch, start another room or join one with a link or code. Anyone can start a room, whether or not they are an admin somewhere else. Each room has its own habits, its own name and look for you, and its own admins; nothing crosses over between rooms. Rooms you joined on another device appear after tapping the refresh line in that list.

How do I share a room safely, and what if a link leaked?

A room link contains the room secret, so anyone with the link can join and see everything. Send it directly to the person you want in the room, in a private channel, and avoid posting it anywhere public. By default only admins see the link, the code and the QR and can invite; in a couple both of you are admins, in other rooms an admin can make someone else an admin or open invites to everyone under Settings, Room. The member list there shows who has joined.

If a link has reached someone it should not have, open Settings and renew the invite link under Room. Everyone already in stays in; old links, codes and QR codes stop working. Admins can also remove a member there.

Why do notifications need the Home Screen install on iPhone?

iOS only delivers web push notifications to web apps that are installed on the Home Screen, and only on iOS 16.4 or newer. In Safari, tap Share, then “Add to Home Screen”, then open Jatkuu from that icon. Jatkuu asks for notification permission only when you set a reminder or turn notifications on in Settings, never on load.

Does Jatkuu work offline?

Yes. Every check-in is saved on your device first and shows up immediately. When you are back online, Jatkuu syncs your changes to the room and pulls in your partner's. Two devices editing at the same time merge cleanly; the latest change to the same item wins.

How do streaks and the forgiving streak work?

A streak counts consecutive scheduled days (or periods, for habits like “3 times a week”) that you completed. Skipping a day with a reason neither breaks nor extends the streak. Missing a day breaks it, unless the habit has the forgiving streak turned on: then one missed day per week counts as skipped and the streak continues. You can turn this on or off per habit in the habit editor.

How do I track sleep, or anything about the night before?

Turn on “About the night before” in the habit editor. The row on Tuesday then stands for Monday night, and a tick in the morning counts for the previous day. Everyone in the room lands on the same day whether they tick in the morning or go back to yesterday, and streaks follow the nights. On the Room tab every daily habit also shows two small dots for the two days before, and a line says when someone caught up on a past day.

What does “day starts at 4:00” mean?

A late evening should still count as today. With the default of 4:00, anything you do before 4 in the morning belongs to the previous day. Checking in at 1:30 on Tuesday counts for Monday. You can change the hour in Settings under your profile.

What do the AI features send, and how do I turn them off?

The AI features (habits from a goal, reason suggestions, weekly insights) are off until you turn them on. When used, our server sends habit titles, schedules, aggregate counts, mood values and your free-text reasons to an AI model that runs on Cloudflare Workers AI, on the same infrastructure as Jatkuu, and to no other company. It never sends names, room ids, member ids or exact timestamps. Turn the features off in Settings at any time; the weekly insight can also be dismissed from Today.

How do I delete everything?

In Settings, “Delete my data in this room” removes your check-ins, moods, pings, reactions, push subscriptions and public key from that room. If you created the room, “Delete room” destroys it for everyone. Do this in every room you are part of. Then remove Jatkuu from your device to clear the local copy. “Export my data” gives you a JSON copy first if you want one.
